Understanding Dehumidifier Sizing and Standards

Dehumidifiers are rated by their pint capacity—the amount of moisture they can remove in 24 hours. In recent years, the Department of Energy (DOE) updated the efficiency standards and testing conditions for these appliances.

Previous Standards (2012)

Dehumidifiers were tested at 80°F and 60% humidity, and common capacities were listed as 30, 50, and 70 pints.

Current Standards (2019)

As of 2019, DOE testing now occurs at 65°F and 60% humidity—a cooler environment with less moisture in the air. As a result, units now carry revised capacity ratings: 20, 30, and 50 pints.

Important Note: The dehumidifiers themselves haven’t changed—only the testing conditions have. A 50-pint dehumidifier under the new standard performs similarly to a 70-pint unit rated under the old standard.
